For my part I want to thank womenincomics.blogspot.com. They sent a pretty good number of viewers over here this week, I think because on Monday's post I mentioned how great it was when Morrison had Logan and Scott sitting around while the women, more powerful than everyone else, did all the work.

  3. Self Promotion:

Here is my Off-Off Online review of a neat play called The Jaded Assassin. It's a fun romp through every kung-fu genre cliche imaginable. Geoff, I thought it might be something worth looking at for your Kill Bill Class.

  4. I guess I can continue to push my new blog at bigmattyj.blogspot.com. currently its loaded with stuff inspired by my brother and I and our continuing conversations about the non-existence of god, but I'll work more stuff in there. I put some comic reviews in there.

  6. Stephen Platt is doing a comic book illustration seminar at meltdown comics in LA on Feb 24th, 5-9PM. I loved this guy as a kid. He took the bulging muscles of 90s comics into the avant guard nether-region. AND he's one of the key Story Board artists on Iron Man the movie.

    4) Best Flash?

    -Wally West by Far

  9. Pat Moler: What does your 10th question mean? I know a lot of openly gay people. Are you implying that there are just as many evil jews?

    ReplyDelete
  10. 1) Both.

  11. Pat: 1) Miller never fell into nostalgia. Miller. 2) Yeah, McKellen as Magneto in the first two films 3, 4, 5) no opinion. 6) Kill Bill, Dark City, A Few Good Men, Spartan, Oceans 12 (Haven't we done this question already?). 7) I am not much of a sports guy. 12. As an addendum to Pat's 10th question, let's all rattle off where we live and how old we are. The thing about the internet is: no context. Let's supply a little.

Astoria, NY (just outside of NYC), 27.

  13. Pat: 1) I haven't read enough of either of their work to make a proper choice, but Moore based on Watchmen being better than any Miller (I've read). 2) Hugh Jackman's Wolverine in his X1 introduction looked and felt like a moving comic book to me. 3) I like Dick as Nightwing so Tim Drake. 4) Michael Rosenbaum. 5) 616 (I love saying 616 because it is nerdy). 6) They're on my blogger profile. Recent favourites were Brick, The Squid and the Whale, The Prestige, Little Miss Sunshine and The Fountain. 7) Civil War. 8) Brass Eye, Deadwood, Firefly, Justice League Unlimited, The Office (UK), Scrubs, Spaced, Undeclared. 9) In a relationship.
    DECODING QUESTION 10:
I think Pat means he has never met any Jewish or openly gay people that were evil, yet many believe that being Jewish or openly gay makes one so. Probably redundant and certainly badly phrased, but innocent enough.

    London, UK, 24.

  14. I'll start with the stats:
27, and a prize to anyone who guesses correctly where I live

as for... 10) geeze, pat, it's obvious you don't live on either coast, where the cities are crawling with evil jewish queens who will pounce on you, force you to listen to streisand, drink cosmos, and circumsize your willy.

seriously tho, as offended as I could be by your quetion, it's really the little "ha ha" at the end that I find most disgusting. It seems at least once a week you post something about homosexuality or religion, and try to make it sound cavalier when it isn't. I'm sorry if your priest or coach touched you, or if they didn't and you wanted them to, but find somewhere else to work out your issues.

maybe I shouldn't take it where I just did, but I got tired of you trotting this pony out and now tacking anti-semtism to it. Please be aware, I speak only for myself and not for G.

  15. addendum: it ocurred to me that I should do as Dan Savage does and make this disclaimer:

Child molestation is a horrible horrible thing that can be extremely damaging. I want to make clear that I am not pro-child molestation by religious leaders or otherwise and I think that it is horrible and violent crime.

  16. 1)Frank Miller or Alan Moore?

Alan Moore. Miller is good, but Moore is a genius, dammit! And Geoff, what'cha got against nostalgia? (P.S. Astonishing X-Men wallows in nostalgia for the 1980s X-Men. I shall never stop harping on this. Well, okay, unless you ask me to.)

2)What's your favorite live action portrayal of a comicbook character?

Earlier Geoff Klock blog entries have convinced me that Ian McKellan's Magneto is the best. I love that chess match at the end of the first X-Men movie, so I should give a shout out to Patrick Stewart's Professor X too. And hey, I guess I'll rip-off the three-way tie thing, and say that I also love Sam Elliott as General Ross in "Hulk." He just nailed that character.

    3)Best Robin?

The one named Jason, cause his name is Jason. Also, I think he's the one that Alan Moore had save the day in "For the Man Who Has Everything." Which was pretty sweet. "'Almost, intelligent,' huh?"

    4) Best Flash?

I like the guy who showed up on "Smallville." He's a super-squick scam artist named Bart, and I love the bit where Clark is rummaging through Bart's bags, and finds a bunch of fake IDs, and reads them aloud: "'Jay Garrick,' 'Barry Allen,' 'Wally West' ... are any of these your real name?"

    5)Regular marvel or Ultimate Marvel?

    Regular, definitely.

    6)Favorite Movie(s)?

Rushmore is my single favorite. I just decided this today.

    7)Favorite Sport(s)?

    Fencing.

    8)Favorite TV Shows(s)?

Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist and Alias.

    9)Relationship status???(I'm things to ask)

Single. But I should say my most recent girlfriend was awesome, and we only broke up for pragmatic reasons. She was so awesome that for my birthday one year she went online and found the exact model of chessboard used at the end of X-Men, and then got it for me.

    10) I have never met an evil Jew. I have met many openly gay men.

  17. Ok, we now have a real internet fight with all the attendant problems. This is not to spill into the comments sections of any other posts.

Pat: my advice here is to apologize for the appearance of equating open homosexuals (a good thing) with Evil Jews (a dangerous stereotype), and lay off talking about sexuality, race and religion around here till you can avoid mistakes like that. I think you made a mistake. If it is not a mistake, but your intention to equate the two, delete your post and pack your bags.

  18. In response to that lil' joke question there was no comma mean met any evil jews or evil openly gay men. Not just evil jews, or Openly gay men. Get it? It was a joke.

In respoonse to Sara. I was abused in Catholic school and once there a older boy try to sexually assualt me and I went crazy and started kicking and kneeing him in the crotch tell he could no longer walk and was screaming like a lil' girl. Which, began my obsession and addiction to violent behavior through out my youth.

That's a small piece of my bizarre back story.

It was a friggin' joke btw. Damn.

  19. Oh and I was referring to the fact that bigots speaks of jews and openly gay people as immoral people. Yet, I've never met either that fit the bill.

  22. I'd just like to repsond to the comments about Grant Morrison's prose.

I have yet to read the issue under discussion, but i have read some of Morrison's prose. A small brit publisher about 7 years ago released "Lovely Biscuits" a collection of Morrison's prose. It features a couple of early Morrison Lovecraft pastiches and 1999 "I'm a Policeman", along with two plays "Red King Rising" (socratic dialogue between Alice and Lewis Carroll) and another dialogue between Aleister Crowley and Victor Neuburg (forget what it's called).

Morrison did have a prose novel - The If - in the works, but that was some years ago. When it comes to prose, I doubt that Morrison has found his own voice.

And as an aside: I gave up on warren ellis as a comic writer years ago, but I am looking fwd to his novel "crooked little vein" in July, I think. Judging from an interview given couple weeks ago on Newsarama, it has an interesting premise.

  23. Craig: I totally forgot about The Others. Love that movie. For those who haven't seen it, you'd be well-advised to avoid spoilers like the plague.

  28. I'm 27 and live in the Chicago suburbs.

    1)Frank Miller or Alan Moore?

-Alan Moore. He's still doing great stuff, while Miller has (perhaps purposely) devolved into a parody of himself. But even if I was to compare their best stuff, I would pick Moore.

2)What's your favorite live action portrayal of a comicbook character?

-Paul Giamatti as Harvey Pekar. Or Thora Birch as Enid. For superheroes, I dunno, Michael Chiklis as the Thing?

    3)Best Robin?

-Man, somebody beat me to Carrie Kelly (that's the one from Dark Knight Returns, right?)

    4) Best Flash?

-Wow, I really don't have an opinion.

    5)Regular marvel or Ultimate Marvel?

-616. But there's some pretty good Ultimate stuff.

    6)Favorite Movie(s)?

-Married for nearly five years, and very very happy.

    10) Have you ever met an Evil Jew or openly gay man? because I never have, but aparently there are in abundance. haha

-Since the question has been clarified, my answer is no. Thanks for clarifying though, Pat, and I understand your being perplexed that people overreacted to a joke, but your wording really didn't make that clear.

Oh, and Bone is great, but I prefer it in black and white. I haven't read the color versions completely, but I've looked through them and didn't especially like them. Not that they're bad or anything, but I simply preferred the B&W. Maybe that's because I read the B&W version first, so I had sort of colored it in my head, and it didn't quite match up to my imagination. Kind of like the disappointment you feel when the movie version of a book isn't what you imagined, although to a much lesser extent, of course. Weird.

  29. Hola Geoff,
Continuing to obnoxiously push my Blog, i did a fairly lengthy review of the new Batman on there (which I've pretentiously broken into two parts). I'd love to hear your thoughts (as well as everyone else on this board). I initially liked the issue, but the more I thought about it, my opinion kinda broke down.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Matt Brady: I'm with you on the whole black-and-white versus color thing. If I first encounter a comic or film or TV show in B&W, I tend to prefer it that way. But I never really color 'em in my head (unless I do it on some subconscious level that's buried so deep I'm not aware of it). It's pretty much black-and-white in and black-and-white out for me.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Troy: I actually don't think I "color in my head" either, at least not consciously, but that was something I came up with when trying to figure out why I didn't seem to like the colored version of Bone.

  32. I was going to write this earlier, but we've been sidelined for the last few days with a horrific stomach virus.

I want to apologize for my earlier comment. Saying that someone was or wishes to be molested was an unfair overreaction. My personal sensitivities to the related issues did not warrant such a vicious personal attack. I behaved immaturely and for that I am sorry.

To Jason P.: You are, of course, correct and you have won a saradani original, in Jpeg format. This one-of-a-king illustration can be used as desktop wallpaper, chat icon or print it up and make a paper airplane out of it, your choice. If you want to collect it, email G and let him know.
