Hamlet Mash-Up, by Geoff Klock

And now for something completely different. I created a Hamlet Mash Up on YouTube: 65 clips from 65 different movies from or about Hamlet, and no clip longer than 23 seconds. Captain Picard, Billy Madison, Jack Skellington, and the cast of Gilligan's Island are among the 65. Enjoy, and share.

  1. Yeah, this is superb.

If you'll forgive me reverting to type, I do feel the editing could be a bit tighter -- just a second deleted here and there and you could shave a couple of minutes off the running time without ill effect. But it's already great just as it is, and it made me laugh out loud several times.

  2. Richard -- I would love it if you would email me some specific examples of what you are talking about. this is the first time I have made something likes this and could use the advice. Do you mean like shaving off half seconds of like a weird reaction shot that goes to quickly into the next clip (cause I tried to do that and had some trouble, for example, on the clip of Simba I got a split second of his reaction to "you have forgotten me" that I could not get rid of. I am not sure iMovie is that precise or maybe I just don't know how to do it.

  3. Well, I want everyone who read the previous comment to see this: the fact is, I sat down to watch the video again, ready to note the places where trimming would be appropriate…and I couldn't find anything. Extraneous half seconds and unnecessary reaction shots were precisely the things I was looking for, but having scrutinized this with a critical eye I didn't see any spots where the clips could have been trimmed much closer without doing harm to the scene itself. It was tighter than I realized on first viewing. I also have to add, it's even funnier on repeat viewings than it is the first time.

(BTW, while I've helped friends with videos, I have no more professional experience than you do -- iMovie is my limit as well. I just always assume that everything I see or read needs more editing. I wouldn't want it to seem as if I was claiming superior knowledge in film…)

  4. Any chance you'll be covering the new Casanova arc on the blog? I understand you have a life and all that fun stuff, but man do I miss reading about comics on here.

  5. Brian G -- that is a totally good question. I will read it and see if I feel like I have anything I really need to say.

  6. That's fantastic -- a colleague was teaching Hamlet a couple of weeks ago and she was emphasizing the pervasive nature of the play on our culture. I wish I had found your blog before now, but I stumbled upon your site while looking for discussions about Women in Refrigerators.
