Comics Out 19 July 2006

Testament was the only thing I saw this week that caught my eye. But Newsarama has put up DC's October solicits: The Dini Williams's Batman October 4, All Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder October 11, Morrison's Authority October 18, and hold your breath for October 25th -- Grant Morrison's fourth issue of Batman ships on the same day as Seven Soldiers #1 and Planetary 26 (the last issue besides an epilogue). If all goes well, which it probably won't.

And check out Mike Mignola's The Amazing Screw-On Head. Its a 22 minute cartoon television pilot available online for free.

Well, I guess I won't point out Runaways #18... oh wait, I just did.
Otherwise, yeah weak week... Though I am looking forward to the issue of Exterminators I missed out on last week.

Finally seeing Superman tonight.

You will have to tell us what you thought, Ping. My main problem involves the Luthor-Superman confrontation (or non-confrontation), and I can't talk about it without spoilers. I may open up a post where those that have seen it can talk freely.

I really liked it, I have three main issues with it but none of them ruined the movie for me.
1) Richard - Why? aside from the fact that it ruins the essential Superman/lois/clark triangle you are left with a guy in Richard who is perfect... as brave and selfless as a man can be but in the end he looses because he's JUST a man. It seems to me that after 20 years of establishing Superman as Clark in disguise and really giving him humanity that it hurts the concept to say that humanity will never measure up to superhumanity.

2) Inconsistancies in regards to the impact of Kryptonite on Superman... it seems like he should have known something was up on the way to the scene if you know what I mean... the fact that he was totally blindsided, and then manages to get the Hard work done before suffering the effects of Kryptonite seemed stupid. I don't know why in every single superman movie the writers write themselves into a corner and have to break their own rules to make it work.

Otherwise I really loved it. The Plane scene was great, It and the Nightcrawler X2 scene are now 1 and 2 with no 3. I really loved how often Singer established scope, how small Superman was and how massive the world was.

Please open a thread, I want to know what issues The Futurist had with the film, because I thought it was certainly the best Superman film overall and is the first movie I've seen in years (Amalie?) that I wanted to see again in the theater before it goes away.

oops, 3rd issue) I still don't see the value of putting it in the same space as the older movies. I would have loved to see a new vision... hopefully one with Intergang and Darkseid.

Ping33: I very much agree with you about Cyclops (the Futurist and I had a long conversation about it). I know the Kryptonite thing bugged him as well. Your third issue, about it being like the first set of films did make the whole thing pointless for me. I will talk more about this when I figure out how not to spoil the film. Anyone who saw the film can drop me an email.

Geoff, I picked up the first two issues of "Casanova" by Matt Fraction and Gabriel Bá.
In the Afterwards the writer, Fraction says that he is attempting to make a "Wall of Sound" in comics:
"What would a comic read like if you were going to produce it WALL OF SOUND-style, if you were going to try and translate one technique from one medium to another technique in another medium? (sic) I want to write like a DJ and collage little bits of everything re-purposing it all to suit CASANOVA, song lyrics turn into lines of dialogue, plot points. Shots from films translated into whole page stanzas"

If I was describing it to anyone other than you Geoff I would say that it reminds me of Nick Fury Agent of SHIELD written by Morrison and drawn by Sergio Aragonés.

" 'he's a big mutant brain. Three even. I heard he's three monks that practised some kind of Occult Zen for so long they fused together in a wad. Whatever... he's an arrogant special effect and I'm going to fuck him up for money'
"We shall crack that pretty little ,ond of yours like a walnut Casanova Quinn. We are Masters of the purest and holiest forms of psychic warfare. The Combatants stare at one another until the other mind shatters. Blinking is allowed. Averting your gaze is not. We have killed nine score and three in this fashion'"
