Free Form Comments

Say whatever you want to in the comments to this post -- random, off topic thoughts, ideas, suggestions, questions, recommendations, criticisms (which can be anonymous), surveys, introductions if you have never commented before, personal news, self-promotion, requests to be added to the blog roll and so on. If I forget, remind me. Remember these comments can be directed at all the readers, not just me.

ALSO. You can use this space to re-ask me questions you asked me before that I failed to answer because I was too busy.

AND you can use this space to comment on posts that are old enough that no one is reading the comments threads anymore.

You do not have to have a blogger account or gmail account to post a comment -- you can write a comment, write your name at the bottom of your comment like an e mail, and then post using the "anonymous" option.

WRITING FOR THIS BLOG. If I see a big free form comment that deserves more attention, I will pull it and make it its own post, with a label on the post and on the sidebar that will always link to all the posts you write for this blog. I am always looking for reviews of games, tv, movies, music, books and iPhone apps.

WHAT IS JAMES READING LET'S FIND OUT:
Went straight from Absolute Watchmen to Dave Gibbons' Watching the Watchmen, which I was surprised to find was a bit of a sl... Nah, 'twas a grand ol' tour behind the scenes, with nary a glimpse of the movie in sight. Absolute Watchmen Companion, essentially. Recommended.

Geoff,

Any chance of finishing off the issue-by-issue analysis of Whedon's Astonishing X-Men? You stopped during the last arc to see how it all wrapped up and since then ... nothing.

Please?

Brian -- I will put that on my things to do list. I just found the end so disapointing because I misunderstood a plot point I never went back. G

This one is more for Jason, but have you considered doing a feature on Mark Millar's Ultimate X-men, following your Claremont X-men? Despite Millar being Millar, apparently a lot of the plot points were stuff that Claremont had intended to do with X-men, but couldn't because of editorial.

And I thought Drag Me to Hell was disappointing. The morale of the story thought it was "don't screw other people over to advance in life," but really, it's "gypsies are assholes."

Does anyone actually know a positive depiction of the Romani in pop culture? I would imagine the only excepts are the magical negro types. House M.D.'s might have been the kindest and even that wasn't exactly glowing. For a community of people who were exterminated and treated as poorly by the Nazis as the Jewish, there really isn't a lot of sympathy for them.

Christian: I don't know if it counts as pop culture, but Steven Brust's novels often feature Romani or Romani-equivalents (in fantasy text) in sympathetic ways that don't oversimplify them.

Christian,

No Millar for me. Can't stand the guy's work, although I do respect what he was going for in Ultimate X-Men. Ask Geoff to do it!!!

And Geoff, what about the issue-by-issue of The Maxx? I was looking forward to your getting past the cartoon and into the increasingly bizarre second and third acts of the series.

Go back to The Invisibles, Geoff! Ping33 has been trying to get people to revisit it for some time now.

Did anyone discuss Paranormal Activity yet? On his blog - Neil talks about the bad ending. Apparently there were multiple endings shot - but the theatrical cut of the film features one suggested by Stephen Spielberg. I think if the film had ended five seconds earlier - it would have been perfect.

Is anyone else feeling a general loss of interest in the world of comics as of late? Maybe it's just a phase that I'm going through - but I can't find a book that excites me enough to go to the comic shop on a regular basis any more. Maybe I've just been too busy with my other projects.

Brad -- thanks. That is hilarious

Jason -- thanks. I did not continue with the Maxx cause it felt like people were not that into it, but I will think about returning to that.

And i already did a major essay on Ultimate X-Men, so I am not going back there.

Streebo -- I am not re-reading the invisibles. The art is simply too bad for so much of it, I just cant subject myself to it.

and I am TOTALLY feeling a loss of interest in the comics lately. it is BORING AS HELL out there. That is why the weekly Comics Out posts stopped: I am getting almost nothing and what I am getting is just not moving me to write.
