Not Quite an Exclusive on Iron Man the Movie

In the upcoming Iron Man film Tony Stark will be played by Robert Downey Jr. This broke on Ain't It Cool News moments ago; as of this moment, Newsarama does not have this up. I beat Newsarama to a story. The substance abuse thing is now inherent in the casting; smart stuff, and fun. You heard it here second.

makes sense. He's an alcoholic just like Tony Stark.

Brilliant.

I don't see why not. With Iron Man the suit will do most of the work.

I think you get the playboy/alcoholic part with Downey, but what might be missing (just from casting vibes) isthe genius industrialist/engineer take. It's not just that he's the one that climbs into the suit, it's also that he built it. This is a presuming his traditional origin story: industrialist who makes his money in arms manafacturing is hurt touring a factory close the war zone has near death experience and needs the suit to live, becomes a guilty hero, etc...

The ultimates version, while a lot of fun, is a bit more dilettante/gentleman hero, brain tumor or no. Plus, with Orson Scott Card writing (not a bad idea), he has a new origin that made him a mutant brain ( dumb dumb idea).
