Comics Out 13 September 2006
CASANOVA 4 is out today. If you don't have one, two, and three just dive in. This is my new favorite book. In the news (newsarama.com) Frank Miller was on NPR talking about the American flag, and Joss Whedon is taking over the much talked about Runaways (the collections of which I will be tracking down today, if I can). Review. Comment. Discuss.

'Casanova' is an absolute joy to read. It's like if Hunter S. Thompson had written 'James Bond' novels. That, 'Moon Knight' and 'Fell' are my current favorite titles.
I think that Vaughn's work on 'Runaways' was a little over praised. 'Y: The Last Man' and 'ExMachina' were much better crafted stories, not to mention more substantive.
Vaughan's Pride of Baghdad is also out today. I'm thinking I'll be breaking down and picking this up along with Making Comics and the new Doom Patrol collection. It's going to be an expensive day.
Whedon taking over of Runaways is certainly the most promising of all of Marvel announcements. Well, that or I'm underestimating the synergies with Guiding Light fans, which even if many comics, Marvel's especially, are soap operas, I don't think I am.
First Second's second line of books comes out this week, and I've been looking to pick up Kampung Boy since it was announced.
Guiding Light -- the Avengers-daytime soap opera crossover. At least everybody is thinking crazy. Even if every idea can't fly, at least everyone's heads are in the right place -- good and nuts.
I just, minutes ago, finished volume 2 of Runaways and loved it. Volume three is waiting for me in the next room. I will have more to say soon, but one of the nice things about the book, if you are thinking about buying it, is that it is published in these little mini-trades that only cost 8 bucks. So you can get issues 1-18 for like 24 dollars, which is the total cost of, say, the 5 issue Marvel Zombies trade. Check it out.
That would be the digest format, made ever so popular by the manga that the kids these days are buying. Marvel even "borrowed" Tokyopop's trade dress with those...hmmm...are Runaway ones in color?
Ach...to sleep. It's too late for me to type comics.
yes, they are in color. Now having finished volume three I can say they are all great fun. The only odd thing is that it seems like, at the end of book three, the thing has run its course, all the loose ends have been tied up, roll credits. It will have to be reinvented a bit for volume four, and reinvented again when Whedon gets on. It should be fun.
I feel like they shoulda gone all the way with rippin--erm--"borrowing" tokyopop's style and made the thing in reverse. right to left.
I only read book 1 so far, but right now I'd say it's cute, but what I truly love are the issue covers, really friggin' beautiful. The color work and the softening of the lines... bloody brilliant!!
