Free Form Comments (For Real This Time)

I put up the call yesterday for free form comments, but the topic that was on my mind took over, generating 38 (often massive) comments so far. That has been great fun to read, but it also discouraged anyone from posting the random thoughts Free Form Comments is supposed to be home to. So here are the actual free form comments for the week.

Say whatever you want to in the comments to this post -- random, off topic thoughts, ideas, suggestions, questions, recommendations, criticisms (which can be anonymous), surveys, personal news, self-promotion, and so on.

For my part, thanks for making yesterday's post the most interesting thread we have had here in a while.

I have to agree with one of the anonymous posters on the other thread: I wanna see you write in depth about Seven Soldiers! I really enjoyed the month of Seven Soldiers over at Comics Should Be Good, but I think an analysis from Dr. Klockkkhammer would be great.

So I guess no more "TV Week" until LOST comes back. Boo.

Also, Geoff: I have to ask-- are you planning on seeing Fantastic Four 2? The first movie was awful, awful, but the Silver Surfer has me really intrigued.

Does anyone have an opinion of Jim Krueger? An early issue of Alan Moore's Supreme had this ad for something by him called "The Foot Soldiers", with quotes from Alan Moore, Kurt Busiek, Stan Lee, and I think someone else that I liked, all saying how good it was. It was a really effective ad in putting the title in my head -- not so effecting in making me want to buy it, until now, ten years later, and now I can't find it.

Yeah, Seven Soldiers is begging for it but since I suspect you've already done something on Seaguy, I'd like to see whatever meager scraps you can give us.

Darius: I can't do Morrison again. Maybe later.

Mitch: OK -- i put it back just for you.

Jason: I did not know about that

Jumann: Seaguy?

Geoff: I keep forgetting to ask: this week, Ocean's 13 is out - what are your feelings, if any, going into it?

Geoff Klock said...

Marc: apprehension. Ocean's 11 is a perfect heist movie in no need of a sequel. Ocean's 12 was hated by everyone but I loved it and thought it was a hilarious subversion of the genre -- and first movie. I do not understand what more is needed. Will 13 repeat 11 or 12? Is it possible to do something else? I hope so -- I was surprised with 12, and am hoping to be surprised by 13.

I will blog a review of 13 -- I see it on Friday

I loved 11 upon release and was initially disappointed by 12 until I saw it on DVD over and over and came to love it. 13 is doing what I thought 12 should have (including Garcia with the "good guys" - no spoiler - it was in the trailer). I'm cautiously optimistic for 13, but really don't see how they can go wrong - especially since they seem to be rectifying the only problem I had with 12 - the downplaying of the other members of the team. Soderburgh hardly disappoints me and I can't believe they'd pick a bad script.

Hey, here's my weekly blog plug: Reviews of lots of recent comics, a couple of last week's comics, The Professor's Daughter, Pyongyang, Elk's run, and Death Note volume 11.

Geoff: I have mixed feelings about Ocean's 13, too. Apparently, from what I've read, it will return to the style of the first film (back to Las Vegas, casino heist etc)because the second lost money. The little item which keeps me interested is the line about engineering a win for all of the patrons of the target casino. As far as seeing it that makes it sound a little more worthy than seeing it due to love of the first two.

O13 begins here in Australia on June 14, and I've already made plans to see it (and, as I don't live in a metro area, I assume O13 is opening big here in Australia because it's opening in a small independent cinema in my town).

As your review of O12 turned me on to it, I'm also looking forward to reading your review.

Geoff - if you don't want to review Morrison after your X-Men analysis - how about Ellis' Planetary? I know your book basically did that - but it would be nice to see your thoughts on all of the later issues as well as a point by point break down of the earlier ones.

Speaking of which - when is How to Read Superheroes Comics and Why second edition coming out?

Comics fandom needs you right now more than ever. We are halfway through the current age of superheroes and people need direction!
