Ping gave us his top ten list this week in Free Form Comments. I have only played a handful of videogames since they got all complicated and novely and world-building, but I am proud to say that two of that handful are on Ping's list -- Jet Set Radio Future (which I always called Radio Free Europe for no reason), and Super-Metroid (that was the Nintendo Cube one right?). And they were great. Except Metroid had terrible creature designs. Generic bug-aliens. On Radio Free Europe you could design your own graffiti and spray it on everything.
I would also say that the Simpsons Game for the Game Cube was one of my favorites, if only because of the perfect way labor got split up between Sara and Me -- she likes to look for stuff and I like to race around, and the game had both, so we teamed up and won.
Also you have to love classics like Super-Mario brothers, if only because the Japanese have such an instinctual grasp of the everyday life of working class Italians.

Most of these lists now contain things like Halo, but the two games that I have played more than any other are:
Wrestlemania 2000 for the Nintendo 64 and Madden04 for the PS2.
Super Metroid was the 2D Super Nintendo one, the one on the GameCube was the 3D, first-person Metroid Prime.
I have trouble making these lists, because so much of what makes games great is the constantly-evolving technology, and revisiting old favourites has often taken away some of their lustre. But: at some point I made a list, and it looked like this (no order):

My video game experience is rather limited, to say the least.
Greatest game ever:
SNK Baseball Stars for the NES.
Everyone between the ages of 29-35 knows this.
I tried to make my list technology free, hence Wind Waker over OOT. If it was most played: mlb the show 06 would rule the roost. The most amazing thing to me is how well games like Joust and the SNES Metroid still stand the test of time. Also the evolving tech thing is why I reserve one space for NOW. As for halo... I used to play 16 player LAN matches of that at a friends house and made a 100 foot cross over cable for another set of friends so we could play upstairs/downstairs team games... THAT is dedication! By the time halo2 came out it was anti climatic for me. I'm on vacation right now (posting via blackberry) when I get back I will get halo 3 but methinks the magik is gone.
