Shining (Commonplace Book)

I never put it up on the blog before because I assumed everyone knew about it, but I bumped into someone the other day who had never seen this brilliant editing joke using the film The Shining. I am putting this up for the eight people who missed it. For everyone else it is worth watching more than once.

My dad likes "The Shining" a lot. He even did his own sort-of-parody of it for an art project he did while in school. So I thought he would LOVE this. I showed it to him on YouTube and he didn't laugh at all! I couldn't believe it. Curse you, father!

While we're sharing funny old internet videos, Geoff, I assume you've seen this, but if you haven't, well ... you must. (I was reminded of this when I read your annotations at the end of the latest Claremont review, about how it makes sense for Jean to keep dying and coming back, 'cause she is called Phoenix after all.)

There were a bunch of similar faked-up trailers that did the rounds shortly after this, but none of them came close to touching it, all cheating with added dialogue and visual effects etc.

I love how by necessity you almost get a reverse of the actual movie's arc; the longer the trailer plays, the earlier in the film the footage is plundered from. And the repurposing of one of the film's scariest moments (bathtub) is hilarious/terrifying.

Yeah, fie on Stephen King for saying that Jack Nicholson couldn't give Jack Torrence a proper character arc.

I totally agree about the hilarity resulting from the repurposing of the creepy bathroom kiss. LOL

Scene -- I am glad someone new got to see it here.

One more thing to note about it. What it does is build a lot of tension through the first half, because you keep waiting for the other shoe to drop. When Peter Gabriel kicks in, you realize they are going all the way with this, and crack up.
