Comments on the Matt Fraction - Geoff Klock Comic Geek Speak Event

I told Sara I was surprised that no one commented on the post announcing the Matt Fraction Comic Geek Speak episode next week that I will be a part of. Today, she noticed I accidentally disabled comments on that post. Sorry. If you wanted to say something about it -- including letting me know anything you would like to hear us talk about -- say it in the comments here.

haha i tried to comment and was put off ("geoff changes his website and thinks he's too good for comments!")

definitely get into kill bill. i think his "mix tape" theory of pastiche is really interesting and more complex than it seems. maybe try to draw that into your own poetics territory. good luck! i'm looking forward to it

Geoff: if you get a chance, ask Fraction did he have his choice of artists on Iron Fist and Punisher. He obviously writes arcs around artists as many great writers do (Moore, Morrison, Gaiman, Millar, etc.) If so, what is the new Casanova artist bringing to the table?

You could ask Fraction what he thinks of Nexus. Back in the 80's, I thought it was one of the best science fiction comics out there (okay, okay, there wasn't much competition). Haven't revisited it in awhile, though, and I'd really be interested to hear Fraction's opinion of it. He might convince you to check it out. Or he might convince me that it wasn't so good after all.

I have no ideas for questions, but I do think my head is going to explode from the ep.

Really looking forward to it.

You are aware that once Fraction traps you in a fiction suit as Doktor Klockhammer - that strange things may happen to you?

Remember what happened to Grant when he tortured King Mob?

One thing that always bothered me about some of your CGS podcasts was the way some of the CGS guys would literally refuse to accept metophoric or symbolic interpretations of the superhero narrative.

I believe Bryan Deemer's exact words were; "my brain doesn't work that way. I take everything at surface level."

I think I'm referring specifically to the Animal Man Book of the Month episode. Matt went so far as to say that if Grant Morrison's Animal Man possessed religious parallels - that he "really hates it then, because I hate religion."

Would it be worth mentioning that part of the beauty of semiotics is that these symbols go to work in our subconscious - whether or not we are aware of it? For example - everyone knows Darth Vader is the bad guy - which is a recognition of the shadow archetype manifest in Vader. You know he's the bad guy - because your brain works exactly that way whether one realizes it or not. I'm not saying anything new here - but a few simple examples may be in order.

Whatever you guys talk about will be great. You always find something fascinating to say.

Marc, Troy: thats a good idea, but we may just have to stick to Casanova given the format. But you never know.

Streebo: oh. yeah. I kinda forgot about that. I should start to worry...

Streebo, Kelly Sue: yeah the Animal Man Book of the Month episode was a hoot. I would love to get into that again, but I fear it will take us far afield and take up the whole thing. What we should do is devote a seperate thing to the issue, where he and I can freak out at each other. It's a very fun topic, and there are a frightening number of people out there who thing the whole concept of implicit (or semi-implicit metaphor) is a scam. Everytime it comes up I am glad I became a teacher.

Huh, I thought I'd found all the Geoff Klock CGS appearances, but I'm sure I haven't heard this Animal Man one. Anyone have an episode number/link?

(P.S. Looking forward to the show, knock 'em/each other dead, Geoff 'n' Matt.)

I love the CGS guys, but I kind of hope they just referee for this one. Clash of the pop culture titans!

Kellysue -

Here is the link to the Animal Man CGS Book of the Month Club podcast.

Just to clarify - I love the CGS podcasts and value the differing opinions on the show. The comments I mentioned above were just two that really stuck in my craw upon hearing them.

I like all of the CGS guys - but I think Prof Murd and possibly Peter Rios are most in line with my way of thinking. They seem to appreciate it more when metaphoric and symbolic significance plays out in comics.

That is all. I will stop clogging these comments now.

Thank you.

Streebo: Ah yes, the surface-value seeker and the guy who hates religion. I absolutely agree. Jaw-droppingly inane. I've never before heard anyone so hellbent on not understanding something.

I've listened to a bunch of those podcasts and these guys do make some solid points in other discussions, but that Animal Man one was just embarrasing. I'm all for differing opinions but why would someone who basically refuses to read want to host a literary discussion of any sort?

Still, Geoff, you made some excellent observations on the book and pointed out a bunch of stuff I hadn't picked up on, so that was great.

Another off-topic, if-there's-time suggestion. I'd be really curious to hear Fraction's thoughts on All-Star Batman.

troy -- I agree.
