30 Rock this week

30 Rock has been more than a little lame this season, but there was a great line that made me laugh out loud this week. Here is the scene, about 30 seconds long (I just now discovered Hulu lets you edit episodes into clips to embed in this crazy intuitive manner -- AWESOME.)

And here is what you need to know to get the joke -- Baldwin is referencing his role in Aaron Sorkin's Malice.

I love it when TV rewards me for watching too much TV by telling me I am special for getting a joke maybe some people missed. (There is no emoticon to tell you what tone of voice that should be in, so I will just tell you it is some kind of light self-deprecating irony)

I agree that 30 Rock has been a bit flat this season.

But a recent line from Doctor Spaceman had me in stitches. Sadly it depends on pronunciation and may not translate:

Tracey: What's the verdict Doctor Spaceman?

Dr Spaceman: Tracey, I don't know how to say this ...

... dee-arr-betties?

Yeah. Hulu doesn't work outside the US.

Ah. Sorry. Alec Baldwin is listing off his sins in the confessional booth and one in the middle is "I once claimed I was god in a deposition."

Haha awesome. Thanks, Geoff. I love the idea of Hulu, but the US-only thing is terribly annoying. It's not like viewers from outside the US is paying any less than people inside the US, so it's all bureaucratic copyright bullshit at this point.

I like that Sorkin snuck his "never sick at sea line" into Baldwin's monologue and, years later, 30 Rock was one of the contributing factors that got Studio 60 knocked off the air.

Hubris and irony abound!

I agree I watched 30 rock Season 1 on DVD and has accelerated in it's implausibility and over-the-top-ness too rapidly. You see it in many shows.
Example 1: Simpson's around season 8 or so on.
Example 2:Seinfeld after Larry David left
Unfortunately, 30 Rock seemed to make this leap in about a season and a half! They're all sitcoms, their all there to make us laugh, but we laugh harder when the show is grounded in reality and then taken out of it by humor. Baldwin and Fey were great in season one because the characters were at odds. CEO vs creative type. Now they're buddies for the most part and it's not as exciting. They also take up 80% of the screen time. This is a large cast! When was the last time they used the writer's room or a sketch from TGS with Tracy Jordan?

I totally missed that reference, Geoff...

30 Rock has been off... precisely for the reasons Andy mentioned (although I personally rather enjoyed last season), it does seem to have been a bit better the last 2 or 3 episodes though.

I caught that reference, hell yes. Also, I use that line a lot at work.
