Free Form Comments

Say whatever you want to in the comments to this post -- random, off topic thoughts, ideas, suggestions, questions, recommendations, criticisms (which can be anonymous), surveys, introductions if you have never commented before, personal news, self-promotion, requests to be added to the blog roll and so on. If I forget, remind me. Remember these comments can be directed at all the readers, not just me.

ALSO. You can use this space to re-ask me questions you asked me before that I failed to answer because I was too busy.

AND you can use this space to comment on posts that are old enough that no one is reading the comments threads anymore.

You do not have to have a blogger account or gmail account to post a comment -- you can write a comment, write your name at the bottom of your comment like an e mail, and then post using the "anonymous" option.

WRITING FOR THIS BLOG. If I see a big free form comment that deserves more attention, I will pull it and make it its own post, with a label on the post and on the sidebar that will always link to all the posts you write for this blog. I am always looking for reviews of games, tv, movies, music and books.

I can't believe Admiral Adama from Battlestar Galactica was in Blade Runner.

What's the difference between a foreword and a preface? Just curious, the new Indy 4 2-disc edition comes with a rather nice photo-book that includes both... and an introduction too!

Neil,

Your expertise on male whiteness are requested in the Metal discussion below.

scott: My distinction:

The author of a foreword doesn't actually have to say anything. He or she usually has a recognizable name and is transferring that recognition or stature or authority to the author of the book by osmosis. They provide a longer version of the back-cover blurb.

The author of the preface, on the other hand, does have to say something meaningful and usually has to contextual and/or explain what the book is doing and why it matters. He or she doesn't have to be anyone important at all, but s/he needs to give you the undergraduate class lecture equivalent of a book summary.

I've been writing regualrly at my blog again recently, so consider this shameless self-promotion. Also, Geoff, I did a recent post on one scene from All-Star Batman that I wanted to see if you felt was worthy of inclusion here. Should I e-mail it to you, do you just go to look at it ? I completely understand if it's not Klock-worthy.

email it to me because I totally may forget to look at it. Email is pragmatically a things to do list for me.

Scott: Is there a dedication and an epigraph or two as well?

I remember reading something about this in Kevin Jackson's Invisible Forms. If I recall correctly, he attributes the word "foreword" to some nineteenth century Englishmen who wanted to replace certain words with new Germanic-rooted ones, "foreword" being one of the very few that stuck. Not that it actually replaced anything, of course, now we just have one more word for this thing.

I notice that some dictionaries make the distinction that a preface is written by the author, whereas a foreword can be written by anyone. So, given the words' origins, it seems obvious that a foreword contains a third party's sullen, pragmatic user's manual, while the author's adorably heartfelt love letter to his or her own writing is called a preface.

Not sure how this applies to Indy, but there we are.

On the topic of funny student mistakes:

"Later, as time pasted..."

and one that just made me feel old

"When our grandparents originally took our parents to see the original Star Wars films..."

Speaking of "Star" movies ...

Did everybody see the newly released photos from JJ Abrams' Star Trek?

I am so excited about this movie.

RE: Admiral Adama

When I first looked at the post, I thought we were talking about Admiral Akbar (It's a trap!) ... aka... Fishheaded dude from Return of the Jedi.

But that further reminded me of a great misheard lyric of mine, I don't even know the actual lyric but I could swear Kanye West dropped Admiral Ackbar's name in the song "Heard 'Em Say" For a moment, that made Kanye West the MOST AWESOME RAPPER EVER in my eyes :)

If you are keeping up with my twitter feed you know my wedding is in less than two weeks -- forgive me if I rely on guest blogs and nonsense here until then.

Happy for you and Sara rather.

Don't drop her. All those work outs would be for naught.
