Ruskin Quotes (Commonplace Book)

Working on a budget, I remembered some good John Ruskin quotes

“The bitterness of poor quality lingers long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.”

“There is hardly anything in the world that some man can't make a little worse and sell a little cheaper, and the people who consider price only are this man's lawful prey.”

Then I came across some other good ones, having nothing to do with money:

“In order that people may be happy in their work, these three things are needed: They must be fit for it; They must not do too much of it; And they must have a sense of success in it.”

“The greatest thing a human soul ever does in this world is to see something, and tell what it saw in a plain way. Hundreds of people can talk for one who can think, but thousands can think for one who can see. To see clearly is poetry, prophecy, and religion — all in one.”

“They are good furniture pictures, unworthy of praise, and undeserving of blame.”

I really like those quotes, especially those about frugality. My mother has said similar things for a long time, and I buy into it hook, line, and sinker.

I appreciate deals and cheap things, but one shouldn't look past quality. I've done that thing where I bought something of lesser quality, only to have it not function in the way I had hoped, and then wish I had just sprung the extra $40 or something to get the better version.

This doesn't work for everything (the paperback of the Watchmen is fine, I don't need the absolute), but there are times when it makes sense to wait a little longer and buy something of higher quality, the works better, and lasts longer.

Good post.
